AeroExpo 2012

Sywell, Northampton 25-27 May 2012

expoae The AeroExpo is primarily a general aviation trade event but also describes itself as ‘the UK’s Festival of Aviation’.

This year it was blessed with blue skies and bright sunshine; fortunately the strong wind was fairly down the runway, particularly on day one.

Over 800 aircraft were booked to visit over the three days, their owners keen to visit the numerous trade stands and view the compact static display.

Others merely stopped for lunch or to pass the time with friends and colleagues. The great weather also brought out many light aircraft photographers who certainly appreciated the great variety of types, the best views being as they taxied for departure past the public areas. A dedicated vantage point near the threshold would have been greatly appreciated for the continuous morning arrivals.

Classic vintage types were present in small numbers and most of the cheap new fibreglass models were in evidence, particularly from Cirrus or Vans. The only flying display was from the pair of Pitts Specials just after lunch, their flawless aerobatics even interrupting the buying from the trade stands. This event is a significant diary date for UK owners, there were overseas visitors though, considering the excellent weather, less than might be expected. The organisation was excellent and good value for visitors. I look forward to future events.
