UK Grand Prix Helicopters

Turweston Airfield, Buckinghamshire, UK 5th July 2026

Report by Peter Davison & Colin Coulthard

This annual gathering of helicopters, the largest in the UK, is symptomatic of the growth of the rotary sector and the increased demand for aerial transfers to the nearby Silverstone Circuit.

All weekend, and on the morning of the big race, helicopters shuttle back and forth, collecting drivers, support teams and media from offices and residences to this famous venue.

Around 1300 hours the flights stand down at Turweston. This is coincident with the ‘Driver Parade’ prior to the famous GP race at 1500. Helicopter crews take a rest, helicopters refuel and await the call for the return transfers late in the afternoon.

The organisers realise that this rotary gathering attracts the interest of enthusiasts and photographers and generously organises a ‘walk down’ of the static airframes during this stagnant period.

Turweston is also home to the Light Aircraft Association and numerous general aviation aircraft so the resident restaurant and teaching facilities are busy with students and staff.

Also resident on this occasion were two historic aircraft, an ex-French air Force Broussard and a static de Havilland Canada Beaver; both in excellent condition.

Peter Davison is an aviation author and editor from the United Kingdom.
